"礼"从本质上讲是在神话思维影响下宗教仪式的变形再现,是尘界与灵界交流的主要方式。先秦儒家作为"礼"的继承者、倡导者和整合者,其体察的"礼"有诸多内容,其中最能表现"礼"之意涵并展现儒家之积极作用的是"祭祀礼"。祭祀礼完整展现了"礼"沟通"圣"与"俗"的意义,并通过对生命意识与死亡意识的仪式表达阐释了"礼"所蕴含的一种原始意蕴。

"Ceremony" is,in its essence,the transformed representation of religious rites dominated by mythological thinking;it is the chief means by which the secular world communicates with the sacred.The Confucianism before the Qin dynasty(221 B.C.-206 B.C.),in its inheritance,advocacy and integration of previous ceremonies,has endowed the "ceremony" with many complicated implications,of which the "sacrificial ceremony" best characterizes the essence of ceremonies and the positive roles of Confucianism,as it has completely presented the importance of "ceremony" as a spirit-channeling medium,and has interpreted the primitive implications of "ceremony" through ritual expressions of life-and-death awareness.
