中西方体育文化的交往出现了两次高峰期。第一次是在公元前后，从亚历山大东征开始，到北匈奴进入欧洲腹地结束，这一时期的交往表现出互相推进的姿态。第二次以1840年的鸦片战争为起点，直到今天，这一阶段的交往以西方体育文化向东倾泻为基本特征，直到最近30年才稍有改观。推动中西方体育文化交往的重要力量有军事战争、民族迁徙、商业往来和文化融合。就某一区域和时间段而言，包括体育在内的文化流动不一定总是从先进到落后，或从文明到愚昧。在国家林立的国际环境里，文化的流动更多地受制于政治、经济和军事的力量。民族体育文化在与异域文化交往的过程中要做到既兼容又自信，首先必须建立在国家的强盛之上。

There were two peaks appeared in the sports cultural exchange between China and the West. The first time began from the Alexander＇ s Anabasis and to the end of the Huns into the heart of Europe. During this period, the communication features presented as pushing forward actively either China or the West. The second time began from the Opium War in 1840 and even today. At this stage, the Western sports culture was to pour into the East, and the situation was only a slight improvement until last 30 years. The important force to promote sports cultural exchanges between the West and China were the war, ethnic migration, business contacts and cultural integration. On the terms of a particular region and time period, including sports, the cultural flows may not always be from the advanced to backward, or from the civilized world to ignorance. At the national forest of the international environment, the flow of culture was more subject to political, economic and military power. Country＇s prosperity is the basis of the compatible and self - confidence when national sports culture exchanges with other countries.
