因一部《马氏文通》在中国语言学史上做出开创性贡献的维新思想家马建忠,于1894年冬向清政府上书《拟设翻译书院议》,明确指出翻译对中国反抗外国欺侮并最后战胜外敌的重大意义,力陈创设翻译书院、开展翻译活动和培养翻译人才的重要性与紧迫性。但出于种种原因,马建忠翻译思想在相当长的一段时间内处于相对边缘化的地位,本文拟立足历史文献,结合现代学理,较为全面地展开对马氏翻译思想全貌的文化解读,从文化战略考量的角度具体阐述作为马氏译论内在精神的翻译批评、＂善译＂标准、＂名目画一＂和翻译实业化等思想,彰显其在新时期翻译理论与实践中的指导性意义。

MA Jian-zhong is well-known as a linguist for his groundbreaking contribution to the Chinese linguistic study with his Ma Shi Wen Tong.Inspired by the reforming thoughts from the Western world as well as those from Japan,he,as a reform thinker,submitted Proposal on Establishing a Translation Academy to the Qing Royal Court in the winter of 1894.In his Proposal,MA claimed clearly that translation played a significant role in anti-invasion and even in defeating invaders.So he convincingly urged the Qing Royal Court to set up a translation academy in order to train translators and promote translation activities.Due to some historical reasons,MA＇s translation thoughts have been marginalized for quite some time.Based on a systematic analysis of historical documents under the guidance of modern theories,the present authors attempted to undertake a herculean task of interpreting MA＇s translation thoughts from the following issues—the quintessence of his translation thoughts： translation criticism,shanyi criterion,terminology standardization,translators training and translation companization.The authors hope that such an interpretation from the cultural strategy of translation will illuminate the guiding significance of MA＇s thoughts in the translation theory and practice in the new epoch.
