双墩文化符号和黄河上中游的仰韶文化及马家窑文化符号、黄河下游的大汶口文化符号、长江中游的大溪文化符号、太湖流域的良渚文化符号渊源各不相同，富有独特的文化内涵。双墩符号的结体比以往各地出土所见到的史前刻画符号更为复杂多样，具备了构成文字的某些基本要素及其特征。就双墩符号的性质而言，它应该是一种地域性的具有表意功能的符号系统，我们可以把它看成是一种地域性的原始文字。

The symbols unearthed in Shuangdun Heritage Site are quite different from those unearthed in Yangshao, Majiayao and Dawenkou in the Yellow River Valley, in Daxi in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and in Liangzhu in the Taihu Lake Valley as well. The symbols unearthed in Shuangdun Heritage Site have rich cultural connotation, and its composition is more complex and varied than the oth- ers mentioned above. The symbols have possessed basic elements and properties of forming the writing. As far as the nature of the symbols is concerned, it is a regional symbol system which has ideographic function and can be regarded as a regional primitive writing.
