中国古代文论中有许多近义范畴，又有许多对待范畴，前者由意义邻近的名言耦合而成，后者则由意义对待的名言耦合而成。古人好用此类名言界定与论说文学，既是出于慎终追远的文化心理和认知习惯，不愿别作新词，以冲冒被人指为汩没本源、鲁莽率意的考虑，也是为了保证立论的周洽与深刻，从而最大程度地开显文学创造的内里机理，并有以体现天地万物相偶相成的运化规律。它在在体现了中国文学的人文根性，也是构成传统文论的重要特点之一。

There were many categories of near-synonymy and also many categories of antonym in ancient Chinese literary theory. The former categories were coupled with nearly synonymous popular sayings while the latter categories were coupled with antonymous popular sayings. Ancient people preferred to use these categories of sayings to define and discuss literature, just because they kept such cultural psychology and cognitive habits of thinking carefully and respecting tradition that they were reluctant to create new words and expressions to be criticized for submerging the origin of things and acting rashly, and also because they wanted to ensure that their argumentation was eloquent and profound, so that these categories could fully display the innermost essences of literary creating, and show the law of the universe that all things act mutually and perform reciprocally. This reveals the humanity root of Chinese literature, and forms one of the important characteristics of Chinese traditional literary theory.
