春秋战国时期社会“礼崩乐坏”，在各诸候国即将“融入世界”的大背景下，在指引社会的精神走向问题上，知识阶层发挥了前无古人式的作用：第一，他们的主张有助于解决紧迫的现实政治问题；第二，他们的理论源自对历史的剖析，因此能切实地指导当下；第三，这一时期的知识阶层不仅把对社会的思考发挥到了极致，还把强烈的责任心定格为后代文人理想的永恒。这都足以引发我们对当今知识阶层在构建中国文化中作用的思考：在融入世界格局的进程中，中国又面临“苟日新，日日新，又日新”的课题，但百年来的“西学东渐”使知识阶层有了“言必称西方”的习惯；知识阶层面l临着传统文化有用与否的困扰，以及对继承、创新对象的迷惑，而这必将影响中国人的整体精神走向。这种现象在边疆地区更应成为学界关注之必须。

The intellectuals played an unprecedented role in guiding the spirit of the community in Spring and Autumn and the Warring States Periods. They helped solving some urgent and practical political problems, and they proposed some theories which were useful in guiding the practice. In the period the intellectuals concerned their society with strong sense of responsibility. It can an good example for the contemporary intellectuals to follow, and they should play some role in the construction of Chinese culture now when the whole world becomes merged. In the past a hundred years China has been absorbing the western academic thoughts, so the contemporary intellectuals tend to focus on the western leaning only and ignore Chinese culture and its inheritance. It will definitely affect the spirit of the community. Thus, the issue should be followed closely, especially in the border areas.
