This paper focuses on the discourse marker "why".In Sperber and Wilson's relevance theory,the discourse marker "why" in verbal communication can be seen as a signpost which constrains the concomitant background selection,negotiates and renegotiates mutual cognitive environment,thus constraining and guiding through interpretation process and ensuring smooth conversation.This analysis covers four distinct marker functions of "why": marker of attitude and emotion,marker of frame,rectifier of incorrect assumption,and delay device.The research illustrates the procedural meaning of the discourse marker "why".
