This article introduces a new study of emotion--embodied emotion. Embodied emotion is the result of the application of embodied cognition. Theories of embodied cognition suggest new ways of looking at how we process emotional information. It suggests that perceiving and thinking about emotion involve perceptual, somatovisceral, and motoric reexperience ( collectively referred to as "embodiment" )of the relevant emotion in one' s self, just as the individual is in the very situation, the very emotional state, or the very object of thought. Embodiment theories are appealing for the study of emotion because they hold that what individuals "know" about emotion is represented by their capacity to simulate or partly re-experienced emotion. So the core concept of embodied emotion is experiencing an emotion, perceiving an emotional stimulus, and retrieving emotional memory, all involving highly overlapping mental processes. Histori- cally, almost all psychological theories of emotion proposed that emotional reactions are constituted by the body in some fashion. Some suggest that changes in the body cause changes in the mind; Others suggest that changes in the mind cause changes in the body, or that the body and the mind interact to produce an emotional response. Amid theoretical differences, these theories use the common metaphor that the body and the mind are separate, and independent forces that can act upon on another in an emotional episode. But now embodiment view assumes a transactional, recursive relation between the body and the mind. The view questions whether it is scientifically viable to reify boundaries between the mind and the body, and between what goes inside a person' s skull and what goes outside. It suggests the body helps to constitute the mind in shaping an emotional response. That is to say, the body and the mind are not separable and independent cause of emotion, each with their own unique properties, structure, and function. Moreover, under the influence of computer metaphor, cognitively-oriented theories of emotion have dominated the emotion study, so that it is difficult to distinguish between emotion and cognition. Embodiment theories allow scientists to imagine cognitive content in a new way that at the same time directly relates emotions and emotion knowledge because it removes distinctions between the conceptual and the perceptual/interoceptive, so that embodied emotion can relax some traditional constraints, cast off the fetters of emotion research. Embodied emotion can help individuals to understand the relationship between bodily states of emotion and mind the when humans encode, represent, and use emotional information. Despite the sidestepping of critics and problems, theories of embodied emotion can help advance models of the information processing of emotion in exciting and daring new ways. Embodied emotion might contribute to a new paradigm shift in the scientific study of emotion.
