20世纪初，北京大学图书馆经历了由大学堂时期藏书楼向近代图书馆的转变。在蔡元培、李大钊、蒋梦麟等学者的执管下，图书馆日益向管理制度规范化、机构设置合理化、工作人员专业化、藏书分类现代化的方向发展，其功能亦从藏书到注重启蒙再向重视学术研究的方向演变，为中国大学图书馆事业发展做出了积极贡献。

At the beginning of the 20th century, Peking University Library transformed from an ancient book collection house into a modem library. With Cai Yuanpei （1868 -1940）, Li Dazhao （1889 -1927）, Jiang Menglin （1886 -1964） and other scholars in charge of the library, it had increasingly been developing into a library with standardized management system, rationalized organization, modernized classification of books. What＇s more, Peking University Library professionalization of staff, and experienced a functional evolution, changing from collection to enlightenment and to academic research, which has made great contributions to the development of Chinese university libraries.
