文章认为中国传统社会中"尊师"的制度化是精英儒士(师)、统治者及民众三类行动者在特定历史条件下互动并形成典型化的、相互接纳的习惯性行动的产物。其中精英儒士(师)对"道"(知识)的垄断及践行是其获得尊敬的合法性基础;科举考试则使"尊师"获得制度性基础和功利性色彩。在此基础上,文章最后就当前如何重塑"尊师"氛围提供一些启示。

It argues that the "respects for teachers" was institutionalized when the three types of actors(the Confucian elite(Shih),the rulers and the people) interacted with one another and formed the reciprocal typification of habitualized actions.The Confucian elite's monopoly of the(normative) knowledge and their strong internal accountability provided the legitimacy base for their high social status and prestige,while the imperial examination provided the institutional base for the "respect for teachers",which also brought the utilitarian element into the "respect for teachers" institution.Based on the above analysis,the article also tries to give some implications for how to create an atmosphere of respecting teachers in current China.
