情态与评价是实现语言人际元功能的重要语义资源。情态在表达说话人对所说话语的可能性和义务性判断的同时,还表明说话人积极或消极的情感态度。本文以现代汉语的情态表达为例,阐述各类情态体现的评价功能。研究表明,在现代汉语的情态系统中,四类情态不同程度地体现评价意义。可能性和义务性情态是情态系统的核心成员,部分表达评价意义;意愿性和能力性情态具备明显的评价语义,可以视为评价情态,处于情态系统的边缘。

Modality and appraisal are major semantic resources construing interpersonal meaning of language. Modality not only represents the speaker' s judgment of the probabilities or the obligations involved in what he is saying, but also encodes the speaker' s positive or negative feelings and attitudes. The present article illustrates the evaluative function of various types of modality with modal expressions in modem Chinese. The research shows that in the modal system of Chinese, four types of mo- dality convey evaluative meanings in varying degrees. Probability and obligation are core components of the modal system, only some of which indicate evaluative functions. Willingness and ability clearly express appraisal meanings, thus they can be regarded as the evaluative modality, situated on the periphery of the modal system.
