通识教育计划已经在美国高等教育体系中实施了近一个世纪。经过百年的发展，美国通识教育呈现出可喜的发展趋势，也存在着不可忽视的危机。这种现状受到多方面的影响。然而，不可否认，在美国的实用主义传统及经济危机的影响下，通识教育师资水平、学生需求、大学市场化的变化及其相互作用导致并加剧了美国通识教育的危机。
通識教育計劃已經在美國高等教育體繫中實施瞭近一箇世紀。經過百年的髮展，美國通識教育呈現齣可喜的髮展趨勢，也存在著不可忽視的危機。這種現狀受到多方麵的影響。然而，不可否認，在美國的實用主義傳統及經濟危機的影響下，通識教育師資水平、學生需求、大學市場化的變化及其相互作用導緻併加劇瞭美國通識教育的危機。

Up till now, the general education program has been implemented in the U.S. higher education system for nearly a century. Over the past century, American general education has gone through both positive trends and unneglectable crisis. Undoubtedly, against the background of the traditional pragmatism and current economic crisis, the changing situation of teachers＂ quality as well as students＂ demand arid the marketization of universities have combined to ignite and deepen the general education crisis in the United Slates.
