未言成分现象,是John Perry在1986年提出的。近年来,国外语言学界就这一现象展开了激烈的争论。然而,几乎所有的论述都集中在理论假设上,还没有人注意到经验事实。本文介绍了未言成分研究的代表人物以及他们对立的观点,并从这个角度出发,通过验证人们能否判断出与未言成分相关的句子在句法和语义上的完整性证明未言成分的存在与否。本文还讨论了人们对未言成分的解读方式,指出了语境在未言成分理解中所起的重要作用。

Unarticulated constituent is a phenomenon proposed by Perry in 1986. Many papers evaluate the arguments presented by John Perry, who is a staunch supporter and Jason Stanley, who is against the concept. But almost all of them concentrate on the theoretical assumption and little attention is paid to the empirical facts. In this paper, the most influential representatives concerning unartieulated constituent and their conflicting views are introduced. In this contribution, we also investigate the existence of unarticulated constituents using an experimental method. Our study aims to testify the intuitive reflection of human beings towards the completeness of the utterance with contested UC both syntactically and semantically. Besides, we try to study the function of context in the interpretation of these utterances. Our findings suggest that UC does function in the understanding of a discourse, with the help of context.
