从鲜为人知的晋商书信、杂记、诗文、墓志铭、日记、竹枝词及民间歌谣、祁太秧歌、地方小报等民间文献可以发现,晋中民间女子的择偶标准明显向商人倾斜,以求得富裕风光的生活,但婚后却陷入不尽的相思愁怨中,而且存在子嗣不蕃的情况,商妇寿命也大大降低。这一幅幅晋商婚姻生活的鲜活画面,饱含着晋商婚姻生活中不为人知的苦乐悲欢,体现了晋商辉煌背后无数商人妇的酸苦和眼泪,反映了晋商辉煌来之不易。
