近十余年来，如何评价太平天国运动及其领袖洪秀全、太平天国的拜上帝教是否为邪教等问题引发了学术界广泛的争论。通过争论，太平天国运动在反帝反封建斗争中的作用被肯定，人们对洪秀全的个人品质以及他在太平天国运动的作用和地位有了客观全面的认识，同时也否定了关于太平天国的拜上帝教是邪教的说法。
