章学诚的学术精神有两点特别突出:一是贯通,二是经世致用。章学诚以《周易》的贯通精神来总论文史,认为六经皆先王之政典,所以六经皆史,亦即六经皆礼;文由史出,故六经皆文;易象包六艺,故六经皆象。“一阴一阳之谓道”,六经皆器,皆为道之用。道不离器,器随历史而变,道也是不断完善的。即器以明道,六经显现的是古代先王之道,应当贯通一体来认识,方可得古代道术之全;而后世欲明治道,也要本此贯通精神来随时撰述以究大道,方为史学明道经世之学术目的与精神之所在。

장학성적학술정신유량점특별돌출:일시관통,이시경세치용。장학성이《주역》적관통정신래총논문사,인위육경개선왕지정전,소이육경개사,역즉육경개례;문유사출,고육경개문;역상포륙예,고육경개상。“일음일양지위도”,육경개기,개위도지용。도불리기,기수역사이변,도야시불단완선적。즉기이명도,육경현현적시고대선왕지도,응당관통일체래인식,방가득고대도술지전;이후세욕명치도,야요본차관통정신래수시찬술이구대도,방위사학명도경세지학술목적여정신지소재。
There are two specials of Zhang Xuecheng's academic spirit. One is breakthrough and the other is social practice. ZHANG Xue-cheng made a conclusion on literature as breakthrough which is quoted from Yijing. He said Six Classics are the records of the policy of ancient wise kings so all of the Classics are about history and rites as well. Literature is all made based on histories, so Six Classics are all Literature. Yijing's images include Six Arts, so Six Classics are all Image. Six Classics are all Qi ( lit. , vessel ). should be run through one to know, received ancient wise king of all theory; theory of insightful reason-explaining on later generations, also in the six-in-one spirit to write at any time to the final Dao, to the academic way.
