通识教育与公民素养的关系不是一个新命题。文章旨在从时间流变、空间扩展以及个体社会化这三个向度上,重新揭示其间的关系。通识教育是纵向的时代发展,横向的世界交往,以及学生个体融入社会群体必经之桥梁。其在不同时代、不同文化、不同国度的表述不尽相同,教育的目标、内涵、外延、职能、责任也会随时代发展而更迭汰变。但通识教育所发挥的中枢职能功用从来不可或缺也不可替代,如若疏漏或者偏颇,既会导致教育的失职,也会造成健康公民社会的缺憾。

The relationship between general education and citizen accomplishment is not a new topic. The paper aims to re-investigate this relationship from aspects of time stream, space expansion and individ-ual socialization. It is concluded in the paper that general education embodies the advance of times, the communications of the world. And it is necessary for students to integrate with the social communities. It may be interpreted differently in different times, cultures, and nations, and the goal, content, form, func- tions, and responsibilities of education may vary with the advance of time, but its essential functions can not be replaced. Malfunction of general education may lead to the failure of education and absence of a healthy civil society.
