Place and self are inextricably linked. An understanding of the self can be attained through a study of the places in which the subject has lived. The West where Gatsby was born and grew up shapes his self, and his attachment to it gives much meaning to his life. In Long Island, Gatsby casts a nostalgic look at the West and the old times by rebuilding a Garden of Eden of the West in his memory and insisting on West-specific behavioral pattern, which reveals his sense of loss due to his failure to merge with the new place. The ever-changing and placeless Long Island produces in Gatsby feelings of strangeness and alienation. Gatsby' s attachment to the West is illu- sory in nature, and his emotional bonds with Long Island cannot be developed. Failure to establish authentic connection with any place renders Gatsby rootless and homeless without a sense of belonging like a free floating ghost trapped in the state of limbo. The Great Gatsby is therefore more a lament over the rootlessness of modern people than an elegy to the passing of the Wild West.
