中国古建筑在满足其功用性的基础上，更多地表现出伦理这一主题。首先，家国式的伦理观使得中国的古建筑具有封闭式，注重安全感，这也是中国古建筑多用院落式结构的基础；其次，尚祖的传统、儒家的伦理思想使得中国的古建筑的布局和色彩运用上具有等级性；第三，淡于宗教的人本思想使得中国的古建筑追求理性，有别于西方建筑中表现出来的狂热的宗教崇拜。
