The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons; view of the function of literature;moralizing idea; "Shun Mei Kuang E" (admiring fineness and lashing evil)
刘勰论“文”而标举“徵圣宗经”,其立意既不同于孟子、苟子,也有别于董仲舒、扬雄;其“敷赞圣旨”之方式,更在马融、郑玄诸儒外,另辟蹊径,故其论“文用”,不乏自家面目。他在继承儒家注重教化、顺美匡恶等观念基础上,又有新的发展:第一,《文心雕龙》全书宗旨之一,在于重点阐发孔子“四教”中以“文”为“先”的“文”教思想因子,确立了以“贵文”为基础的新的“徵圣宗经”模式;第二,刘勰“顺美匡恶”之说,多结合各体文章之特点,所论怨刺、讽喻、劝诫之对象范围甚广,并不局限“君王”一隅。

Liu Xie advocated "Zheng Sheng Zong Jing" in discussing the function of literature. Closely related with traditional Confucianism, the view of the function of literature constitutes a part of his theory established in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons. However, his theory in "Zheng Sheng Zong Jing" is neither the same with Mencius and Xun Zi nor with Dong Zhongshu and Yang Xiong; and his way to interpret Confucian teachings differs from Ma Rong, Zheng Xuan and others scholars. He elaborated the function of literature from a new perspective with his unique insights. He made two contributions in developing Confucian idea of moralizing and "Shun Mei Kuang E" (admiring fineness and lashing evil). First, in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, he expounded Confucian idea of literature's role in moral education stated in "Si Jiao" (four teachings) and set up a new model of "Zheng Sheng Zong Jing" by advocating literary grace. Secondly, combining characteristics of different articles, his theory of " Shun Mei Kuang E" expanded functions of different types of articles such as sarcasm, allegory and expostulation with a wider range of subjects, not only limited to emperors.
