西南联大历史系在承继晚清民初旧学制的基础上，发展成以时间、空间、事类为中心的三大课程群组，通识中有专精，专精中贯以通识，以弘扬民族文化、振奋民族精神为讲史之时代使命。该系诸师“学术报国”、“读史救亡”的价值取向，使“各美其美，美人之美”的学术品格浸润教坛，在国难方殷的抗战时期，他们为民族文化续命，肩负起了传承中国历史文化的责任。
서남련대역사계재승계만청민초구학제적기출상，발전성이시간、공간、사류위중심적삼대과정군조，통식중유전정，전정중관이통식，이홍양민족문화、진강민족정신위강사지시대사명。해계제사“학술보국”、“독사구망”적개치취향，사“각미기미，미인지미”적학술품격침윤교단，재국난방은적항전시기，타문위민족문화속명，견부기료전승중국역사문화적책임。
Based on the traditional school system of the late Qing Dynasty, the history department of Southwest Associated University had its curriculum of three categories, i. e. , the time-oriented, the space-oriented and the issue-oriented. The courses combined general education with specification and took a mission of popularizing national culture and activating the national spirit. The teaching staff＇s value of serving the motherland with one＇s knowledge and learning history to save one＇s nation made the university fulfill with the academic spirit of perfecting each other. All the teaching staff, at the juncture of national crisis, shouldered the responsibility of inheriting Chinese culture.
