Along with the vigorous development of tourism industry and tourism education, more and more doctoral dissertations choose tourism as the research topics. This study collected 573 doctoral dissertations on tourism from 2001 to 2010 by searching through Wanfang Dissertation Database, Academic Literature Full - text Database of CNKI, and Doctoral Dissertations Database of the National Library of China. This paper provides a systematic analysis on the quantity growth, authors' professional backgrounds, research contents, research methods and case study sites of these dissertations. The results show that the number of doctoral dissertations on tourism has increased rapidly. Many of the dissertations are from the perspectives of multiple disciplines. The 573 doctoral dissertations involve 9 out of 12 disciplines, 28 out of 88 first-level disciplines, and 58 out of 393 second-level disciplines. The majority of the dissertations are studied from the perspectives of Management Science and Natural Science, while disciplines such as Economics and Laws are increasingly involved in the research on tourism. With regard to the first-level disciplines, Geography and Business Administration are the major first-level disciplines in the research on tourism, the proportion of these first-level disciplines, however, is going down. Meanwhile, Management Science, Engineering, Applied Economics and Ethnology are increasingly involved in the studies on tourism. Generally speaking, more and more disciplines have contributed knowledge in the research on tourism. Tourist economy, tourism resources development and evaluation, tourism planning, tourism destinations and tourism products remain as the popular topics in the doctoral dissertations. Sustainable development of tourism, tourism culture, and the cultural and social changes of tourism destinations are getting more and more attention by doctoral students. Researchers prefer choose case study sites in regions where minority ethnic groups are centralized. Research methods are mainly conceptual and descriptive, however, the use of quantitative methods such as mathematical statistics and structural modeling are increasing and the descriptive methods are in decline. Researchers are increasingly aware of the importance of the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. Regarding case study sites, doctoral dissertations involve all the administrative regions, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. Among all the regions, researchers prefer Yunnan and Sichuan provinces most, where researchers focus on cultural and social changes of tourism developments. Beijing is also favored, where they focus more on metropolitan tourism. In addition, there are significant differences on the topics of doctoral dissertations on tourism as a result of different development stages of tourism and development models in China and abroad. The number of doctoral dissertations is rapidly increasing, and the research contents are more and more abundant and in depth. However, Some challenges need to be met in the future research on tourism. For example, there is a lack of interesting and meaningful research questions, the application of the results are emphasized too much, there is a lack of theories to support the development of the research on tourism, and multi-disciplinary feature and scientific research methods on tourism need to be further developed. In conclusion, research on tourism should put more effort in developing more academic research questions, widening research perspectives, increasing the types of case study, and improving research methods and standards.
