T.S.艾略特和哈罗德·布鲁姆是20世纪两位著名的文学理论批评家,但是他们对文学的传统和文学写作方式的态度截然不同。艾略特的诗学本体论反对浪漫主义,提倡诗人在写作的时候应该消除个性,依附于比个人有价值的伟大传统。布鲁姆推崇浪漫主义,认为传统给予后来诗人不健康的影响,后来诗人的写作都是出于对前辈诗人影响的焦虑。艾略特和布鲁姆的理论均指出了文学创作中的规律,他们本人也都反映出对方理论的特征。艾略特本人就是“影响的焦虑”的典范,布鲁姆的写作也深深得益于传统。更重要的是,尽管他们的意见相左,他们都一致强调创新,因为创新永远是文学发展的动力。

T. S. Eliot and Harold Bloom are two famous literary critics in 20th century who hold totally different atti-tudes toward literary tradition and the way of literary writing. Eliot' s poetic ontology is opposed to Romanticism and advocates that when writing, a poet should eliminate his personality and affiliate himself to great tradition which is more valuable than his individual. Bloom admires Romanticism and he affirms that the tradition gives later poets un-healthy influence, the anxiety of which is the source of later poets' writing. Both Eliot and Bloom' s theories indi-cate the regulations of literary writing, and they reveal the characteristics of their counterpart' s theory. Eliot him- self is a typical example of "the anxiety of influence", while Bloom' s writing is indebted a lot to the tradition. What's more important is that although their attitudes are opposite to each other, they both emphasize originality which is the everlasting impetus of the development of literature.
