受韩愈的影响，欧阳修《新五代史》有道和道统的双重关照。探讨《新五代史》史论与欧阳修的“三论”（“经论”、“史论”和“政论”）关系，可知“经论”体现了欧阳修对道与道统的基本认识，是《新五代史》史论阐发的义理根据；“史论”与《新五代史》史论直接相关，而《新五代史》成书较晚，其史论基本上可代表欧阳修的史观；“政论”与《新五代史》史论相通，使《新五代史》体现了当世性。《新五代史》折射出欧阳修及其时代的学术和政治，也使欧阳修成为唐宋时期道和道统研究中不可或缺的人物，这些都超出了五代之外。
