人类社会自诞生之日起,便有意识地对其所处的自然与生态系统进行加工、改造和利用,因而就终极意义而言,人类社会生存所依托的生态环境已经不再是纯粹的生态环境了,而是经过民族及其文化与之相互磨合后所形成的次生生态环境。生态人类学将这一次生生态环境表述为各民族的生境,亦即民族及其文化与所处生态环境之间构成的文化生态耦合体。然而,自然生态则是纯自然的客观存在,是伴随地球生命体系一并而生的,并且不以人类的意志为转移的纯自然形态。因此,文化生态与自然生态最根本的区别正在于,文化生态具有民族文化的根本属性,而自然生态则不具备民族文化这一属性。而其联系则在于,文化生态脱胎于自然生态。

Since its emergence, human society has consciously exploited and transformed its natural and ecological systems. Thus, in an ultimate sense, the ecological environment on which human soci- ety relies on is no longer purely an ecological environment, but a secondary ecological environment produced by different ethnic groups and their cultures, or habitat in ecological anthropology, a cou- pling result of cultural ecology. However, the natural ecosystem is the actual existence of nature proper, accompanied by all beings on'Earth, and following no human will. Therefore, the most fun- damental difference between cultural ecology and natural ecology is that the former has the basic at- tributes of ethnic cultures, while the latter has no such attributes, and their crucial relation is that the former originates from the latter.
