文笔塔是中国科举制度背景下文笔崇拜的产物。大雁塔是中国文笔塔的鼻祖。隋唐以后，科举是普通百姓改变社会地位的唯一途径。在举国崇尚科举的氛围中，各地方政府，甚至民间乡村，为争取本地在登科数量上胜出，纷纷出资建造文笔塔，寄托“朝为田舍郎，暮登天子堂”的光荣和梦想，文笔塔由此成为读书求仕者精神寄托之载体，也从而具有非物质文化的特征。

Writing brush pagoda is a product of the worship of writing brush in the context of the Chi- nese imperial examination system. Big Wild Goose Pagoda is considered as the first building of this type. Ever since the Sui and Tang Dynasties, the imperial examination system had become the only way for the ordinary people to climb up the social ladder. During the atmosphere of national worship of the imperial ex- amination system, the local governments, even the villages, all strove to build writing brush pagodas to anchor their glory and dreams. Therefore the writing brush pagodas became the carrier of the scholars＂ spir- itual pursuit. Hence the pagodas is of intangible heritage attributes.
