晚清以降，江浙地区的侈婚靡费现象甚为泛滥。具体表现为社会中上层阶级举办婚礼花费甚巨，因而助长了婚嫁论财的风气，导致社会下层民众亦纷纷效尤。由此产生了男家无力聘娶致使抢亲等类犯罪频发，女家无力置备妆奁而溺女成风，以及适龄男女婚嫁失时等社会问题。侈婚风气并未得到有效遏制，一直延续至民国时期。
만청이강，강절지구적치혼미비현상심위범람。구체표현위사회중상층계급거판혼례화비심거，인이조장료혼가론재적풍기，도치사회하층민음역분분효우。유차산생료남가무력빙취치사창친등류범죄빈발，녀가무력치비장렴이닉녀성풍，이급괄령남녀혼가실시등사회문제。치혼풍기병미득도유효알제，일직연속지민국시기。
The characteristics of costly wedding in Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province in the late Qing, which was that the upper and middle class spent so much money on wedding that the social custom of mercantile marriage was encouraged, and the lower class followed the lead. The crime of kidnapped marriage, the female babies were drowned by their parents in desperation, and young people cound not get married, and all of these were a result of excessively costly betrothal gift. The custom of costly wedding was still influential in the early period of the Republic of China era.
