For those fortune-seek- ers living in the multicultural New York, the American Dream may mean hell as well as heaven, and an unfathomable abyss of loss and disillusionment as well as promises and self-cultivation. This paper probes the subversive meaning of the American Dream through the theory of intertex- tuality, especially from the perspective of history, juxtaposition and subversiveness, and time and space.
