在清末中国，主要经由日本渠道引介的黑格尔哲学已经广被容受，引起诸多中国知识分子的注意与重视。在容受过程中，他们也对黑格尔及其哲学有着各种各样的解释与使用情况，尽管因为不成系统而不乏误解，但不同程度上亦表明，黑格尔及其哲学，在清末中国的流通情况，以及其介入当时中国知识界、思想界的深刻程度，业已化身近代中国“知识仓库”中的思想资源。而章太炎对黑格尔哲学的容受个案表明，并没有因为章太炎误读黑格尔，就能减弱其“俱分进化论”思想的学术价值和历史意义。亦可发现在西学东渐过程中，当时普遍存在的“在地化”情形和工具主义取向。
