本文将行业的进入壁垒作为需求扩张对市场结构影响机制中的关键因素,分析了在进入壁垒水平不同的情况下,需求扩张对市场结构的不同影响。通过建立理论模型,发现较低的产业进入壁垒会加大需求扩张引起的产业集中度下降幅度,而且,在需求扩张的过程中,横向扩张会比纵向扩张更能导致企业生产规模的扩大和固定资产投资的增加,引起重复建设和资源浪费,造成社会福利的损失。以2005年至2009年我国生产性服务业15个行业面板数据为样本的实证研究也部分证明了上述结论。

Many industrial market demands are growing along with the opening of China market and the accelerated industrialization process. These changes have caused changes to the market structure and its influence on industrial performance is becoming a hot topic. However, the current study on the influence of market structure on the market demand expansion remains elusive in their findings. These studies primarily have two different viewpoints. The first viewpoint is that the increased market demand will reduce the degree of concentration for an industry, such as automobile, steel, and banking industries. The other viewpoint is that market concentration is likely to rise or decline as market demand increases because of its influence on market structure. In fact, the extent of industrial barriers highly correlates with the impact of market expansion on market structure. Although the increase of demand will motivate potential entrants to enter into a market, new enterprises largely rely on the discretion of the entry barrier to access market successfully. The increase of demand will be more beneficial to large enterprises in market share expansion. Market structure will tend to focus on the strength when the market has high entry barrier. However, if the entry barrier is low market expansion will encourage large enterprises and those companies not having enough time to increase scale and market demand. This paper establishes a theoretical model to understand the influence of market expansion on market structure through different entry barriers. We find that with lower entry barrier market expansion will easily result in a more competitive market structure. Moreover, horizontal market expansion is easier than vertical market expansion to help enterprises increase their production scale and investment in fixed assets. Issues, such as duplicated construction, wasting of resources, and the loss of social welfare, could arise from horizontal market expansion. To validate our proposed model, we choose companies in the producer services industry to conduct empirical test of their market expansion experiences from 2003 to 2009. We construct an adjusting effect regression model to analyze the collected data. Analysis results confirm with our proposed model. In summary, market expansion can promote an industry directly by changing its market structure and long-term social welfare. The government should try to stimulate the market demand of local manufacturing enterprises in the producer service industry because the strategy can increase industry competitiveness and market efficiency.
