As an important part of tourism geography, the study of tourist flow has received a great amount of attention from scholars. However, there has been relatively little systematic research or discussion on tourist flow until now, which has caused certain fimitations for other researchers who want to study in this field. Because of the limited research, a systematic review of tourist flow literature is necessary. Based on the Elsevier Science Direct and China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, this research summarized the quantity, theoretical foundation, research methods, scales, and content of tourist flow studies in recent years. Current studies are discussed, and trends in the future study of tourist flow are proposed. The results of this study imply that the number of studies on tourist flow show a rising trend of both domestic soeiety and overseas. Research on tourist flow is mainly published in Annals of Tourism Research anti Tourism Management abroad. In China, studies are mainly published in Tourism Tribune, Human Geography, Economic Geography, Acta Geographica Sinica, and Geographical Research. Regarding research methodology, quantitative methods were widely used in the existing studies, and a variety of methods such as model construetion, mechanism analysis, and discussion on laws have also been used. However, because previous research has shown similar tendencies between multiple scholars and studies, the expansion of a new method should be emphasized further. As to the theoretical foundation, previous studies were mainly based on geography, economics, management, social science, and physics. However, it should be recognized that a theory of tourist flow is still undeveloped. Current research is still mainly a transplant from other disciplines, so theory should be customized and strengthened. From the current studies we find that research on tourist flow has covered several aspects such as the composition of tourist flow, the space-time structure of tourist flow, the volume of tourist flow, the radiation effect of tourist flow, and the mechanism and regulation of tourist flow. These six research areas were reconstructed from the visual fieht of geographical perspectives. However, previous research was mainly based on certain characteristics and performance. Mechanism and overall structure studies were relatively few, and the interaction and relationship between each field needs more attention. Above all, the relationship between tourist flow and destination, and the overall network of a tourist flow, are expected to be key topics in future research. According to future trends in the research, the number of studies on tourist flow will increase continually, anti the theoretical foundation will have more of an emphasis on a unique theoretical system of construction and innovation. The study methods will still be based on other theoretical approaches, but the methods will be revised and new methods will be integrated. The research scale will tend to become more microcosmic and individualistic. The research content will expand to the fields of abstract theory, relationships between people and land, and a more in - depth study of tourist flow.
