The denomination of the concept meaning ＇frog＇ mainly builds on the croaking of this species. The sound forms of such words in divergent languages are analogous, but may not be cognate. However, sound correspondence rules may help determine whether this word in different languages are independent invention, or a shared inheritance. This paper postulates that the examination of this word in various Kam-Tai languages reveals that this word existed before the split of the Kam-Tai language family, and the word in the Min and Yue dialects comes from the Kam-Tai substratum of the proto-language.
