Basing on the stories reflected in the judgments and line statements of the Zhouyi, Gu Jiegang concludes that the judgments and line statements of the Zhouyi were composed in the onset of the Zhou dynasty, which is agreed on by many other scholars. Through textual research, he contends that the chapter concerning "inventing devices by observing images" in Shuo gua zhuan (Ex- plaining the Trigrams) and Xi ci zhuan (Commentary on the Appended Phrases) were composed by the Western Han (206 BCE -9 CE) scholars, which is untenable. The reason for the problems caused by his inference is that he obstinately attempts to demonstrate that the legendary sage rulers mentioned in the Commentaries on the Changes were fabricated by later generations.
