今人多批评谢灵运诗歌用典繁密，但梳理南朝直至唐代的许多关涉前代诗文用典的文论，对于谢诗用典特色非但未见非议之评，甚至多所称赞。明清论者在涉及谢诗用典问题时，也还是褒多于贬，极少诟病的。这种分歧的产生当主要源于诗歌用典判断标准的时代差异。客观地历史地来考察，谢灵运与同时代其他诗人相比，不仅在用典的数量上远远少于颜延之等人，其“用人若己”的特色使得他作品中的许多典故常常不易被察觉，更遑论“繁密”了。
금인다비평사령운시가용전번밀，단소리남조직지당대적허다관섭전대시문용전적문론，대우사시용전특색비단미견비의지평，심지다소칭찬。명청론자재섭급사시용전문제시，야환시포다우폄，겁소후병적。저충분기적산생당주요원우시가용전판단표준적시대차이。객관지역사지래고찰，사령운여동시대기타시인상비，불부재용전적수량상원원소우안연지등인，기“용인약기”적특색사득타작품중적허다전고상상불역피찰각，경황론“번밀”료。
Nowadays many scholars think the allusions in Xie Lingyun＇s poetry are too dense and they are definitely shortcomings. But in investigating criticism about Xie＇s allusion from Southern dynasties until Tang, only positive commentaries exist. There are still more praise than dispraise as with allusion in Xie Lingyun＇s poetry until Ming and Oing Dynasties. The divergences in dealing with allusion among ancient and modern criticism may due to the different criteria of poetry allusion at different times. Objectively observe and study, we will find out that there are not only far more less quantity of allusions in Xie＇s works, furthermore, the characteristic of Xie＇s flexible uses of allusions make them difficult to be recognized.
