美国学者詹启华曾经断言,"孔夫子"这个今天一般世人对儒家创始人孔子的汉语称谓,在利玛窦来到之前的中国本土语言和思想文献中几乎不存在,它完全是利玛窦等西洋耶稣会传教士们"创造"和"制造"的结果。事实上,无论从西洋耶稣会传教士来华前的历史文物还是思想典籍两个方面来看,詹启华的上述说法都不能成立。

Lioel M.Jensen once argued that "Kongfuzi",the popular Chinese name used for calling the founder of Confucianism,did not exist in Chinese language and literature before Matteo Ricci and it was basically "invented" and "manufactured" by Western Jesuit missionaries.In this essay,I would like to argue against Jensen’s assertion by appealing both the historic relics and the literature of Chinese thoughts long before the Western Jesuit missionaries went to China.
