高阳毁家兴学，创建了无锡历史上第一所由中国人自己创办的新式完全中学，造福乡梓，培育了众多人才。他筚路蓝缕，创办并长期主持中国第一所培养民众教育人才的高等学府——江苏省立教育学院，探索中国式的民众教育人才培养模式，成效显著，使该校成为当时民众教育运动的中心。他在长期实践探索基础上形成的以“运用团体力量解决社会问题”、“重视民众生计教育”、“因民众生活之需要而施教”、“让民众自动切不可替天行道”、“注重实习由做而学”为主要特征的民众教育思想，在当时异彩纷呈的民众教育思潮中独树一帜。他“一生尽瘁教育，不治私产”的教育家人格，在历史上曾熠熠生辉，在今天也值得大力倡扬。

After having sold all his family property, Gao Yang set up the first new secondary school run by Chinese in Wuxi and brought benefit to his hometown with numerous talents cultivated. He endured great hardships in pioneer work and established Jiangsu Education College, the first higher education college in China, to cherish mews ability through mass education. He achieved a remarkable success in exploring Chinese talent training mode of mass education and the college became the center of the mass education campaign during that time. On his long-way practice and exploration, he had formed a series of his own mass education thoughts characterized by ＂solving social problems through the group force＂, ＂attaching great importance to the education of people＇s livelihood＂, ＂educating people for their living＂, ＂educating people of their own accord＂, and ＂stressing practice of learning by doing＂. As an educator, Gao Yang had been dew）ting all his life to Chinese education regardless of establishing his family property, which was commendable in the past and is advocated as well nowadays.
