修辞不论作为公共话语论辩还是与此相关的理论学科,都是植根于古希腊文化土壤的独特产物,雅典城邦政治生活中民主化公共领域的存在是此一话语实践得以产生的文化背景,而其＂诉之公论＂的精神品质也与此政治生态相一致。在此,修辞之为学科在中国文化中的缺位,传递出政治形态上公共空间阙失的深刻含意。在认知层面上,作为与辩证法并列的话语形式,修辞作为建立在可能性逻辑上的合理性论辩语式,彰显出有别于独断性科学真理的认知合理性。

Either as the practice of public debating or as an academic discipline, rhetoric is a unique product which takes root in ancient Greek culture. The existence of a democratized public realm in the political life of Athens Polis is the cultural background in which the discourse practices were produced. And its spiritual merit of ＂appeal to the public＂ is consistent with the political etymology. Therefore,the absence of rhetoric as an academic discipline in Chinese culture re- veals the deficiency of public space in political life. At the cognitive level, rhetoric, as a coordinated discursive form of di- alectics and a reasonable argumentative discourse mode based on the logic of possibility, shows its cognitive rationality, which is distinct from dogmatic science truth.
