Puberty is a significant period of physiological changes and sexual maturation transitioning from childhood to adolescence. Over the course of puberty, young people make the transition from looking like children to looking like adults. These physical changes and the underlying hormonal changes have been hypothesized to shape most aspects of early adolescent development and experience, from cognitive performance to self-perceptions and sociosexual behavior. Aberrance in maturational timing seems to increase risk for emotional and behavioral problems during adolescence and early adulthood. In particular, girls who mature earlier than their peers seem to find pubertal adjustment especially challenging and are more likely to experience detrimental sequelae. The negative outcomes associated with early pubertal timing span multiple domains. These include psychological, medical, sexual, social, and academic correlates. The present research was to explore the influence of timing of puberty on girls' self-concept. According to the cluster sampling principle,658 girls aged from12 to14 years old were investigated with the Pubertal Development Scale (PDS) and the Tennessee Self - Concept Scale (TSCS) . The self-reported PDS consists of five items: age of menarche, breast growth in girls,deepening-voice and facial hair growth in boys, body hair growth, and growth spurt and skin changes, especially pimples in both genders. Children were asked to respond to a 4-point scale; "not yet started (1 point) ","barely started (2 points) ","definitely started (3 points) "or "seems completed (4 points) ". Menarche was coded dichotomously; either no (0 point) or yes (1 point) . By totaling body hair growth, breast development, and menarche, all girls were categorized into one of the five pubertal development stages: Prepubertal (2 points and no menarche) ,Early pubertal (3 and no menarche) ,Midpubertal (3 and no menarche) , Late pubertal (≤7 and menarche) ,Postpubertal (8 and menarche) . The Tennessee Self-concept Scale (TSCS) includes 70 items, and is composed of a structure dimension and a content dimension. The structure dimension includes self-identity,self-satisfaction and self-action; and the content dimension includes physical self, moral self, psychological self, family self, social self. The higher the score is,the more positive self-concept is. The Results found that: ①More than 90% of the12 to 14-year-old girls are in midpubertal and late pubertal stage, and few girls are in prepubertal and postpubertal stage; ②The results of two-factor variance analysis showed that, there were no main effects of age and pubertal stage on all factor scores and the total score of TSCS; ③The interaction of age and pubertal stage was apparent on Family self,Social self,Self identity,Self action, and the total score of TSCS,the girls at low pubertal stages and high ages, and those at high pubertal stages and low ages, get significantly lower scores. The research showed that too late or too early puberty timing might both have negative effect on girl's self-concept development. Further research should attempt to elucidate the mechanisms by which early maturation affects the adolescent girl's self - concept development.
