中古时期的晚唐五代是中国历史上一个特殊的时期,这一时期的文艺和文化思想发生了重要的变化。尽管此时政局混乱,国家动荡,但是文艺活动仍然十分活跃。新乐府运动虽然象征着儒家伦理思想在文学界的一次复归,却并没有能够使中晚唐的诗坛再现李、杜时代那样的鼎盛。深受政治权力打压的知识分子,在江南文化中才找到了心灵栖息的场所。江南的文化环境远离权力中心,使他们获得一种精神上的自由与奔放。正是在这样的环境中,中国的文艺思想逐渐发生了转变,长久以来被压抑的审美意识终于得到了苏醒的机会。江南文化与中古文艺精神都获得了提升。

The late Tang and Five Dynasties in China＇s history is a special period, during which great artistic and cuhural changes had taken place. Despite political chaos and social instability, cultural activities remained very active. Although it symbolized a reversion of Confucian ethics in the literature, the new Yuefu campaign failed to bring about the same prosperity of poetry in the late Tang Dynasty as that of Li Bai and Du Fu. Intellectuals, suppressed by political power, found the area south the Yangtze River the habitat of the soul. Far away from the centre of power here, they could regain a spirit of freedom and liberty. It is precisely in such an environment that China＇s literary and artistic thought has gradually changed. The long suppressed aesthetic sense has finally regained opportunities to be rise.
