赛珍珠的作品在美国文学发展史中处于一个独特的地位。作为一个长期接受了中美两种不同文化熏陶的美国作家，其作品显示出与众不同的视角。然而，赛珍珠的作品在中关两国的经典化过程并不是一帆风顺的。赛珍珠的《大地》三部曲由于是中国题材，美国学者认为不能代表美国叙事，因而开始并不被美国的学术界看好。但是，由于这部作品如实地向西方世界介绍了一个东方国度的风情人貌，成为美国读者真正了解一个他们并不熟悉的国度的窗口，而最终被接受下来。中国学术界则受东西方文化差异性、种族和宗教等因素的影响，认为赛珍珠是西方白人作家而对她持排斥态度。直至改革开放以后，随着中关之间的跨文化交流活动日渐频繁，狭隘民族主义的藩篱逐渐被打破，赛珍珠的作品才真正被中国学术界作为经典而普遍接受。

Pearl Buck＇s works have been in a unique position in the development of American literature. As an American writer who was nurtured by both Chinese and American cultures, Pearl Buck＇s works show quite a distinctive perspective. However, Buck~ novel series of Chinese subject matter were not accepted smoothly at the very beginning. Because of its Chinese subject, Pearl Buck~ The Good Earth trilogy weren＇s given due attention when they were first published in the United States, for the American scholars didn＇t think that they re- present the American way of narration. But the novel series showed a realistic picture of this eastern country＇s customs to the western world, so it was finally accepted as a media to learn about this unfamilar country; Chinese acedemic society also held a negative attitude towards Pearl Buck at the beginning, which was mainly be- cause she was a white western writer who had quite a different cultural, racial and religious background. Till China~ opening-up policy, with the increasing Sino-US cross-cultural communications, the barrie caused by narrow nationalism was gradually broken, and Pearl Buck＇s works were widely accepted by the Chinese academic society.
