唐前识别民族的依据经历了由地域风习到礼义制度的转变，对于夷狄的态度也经历了一个由排斥提防到道德感召礼义羁縻，再到平等相待最终视为一体的过程。这一融合过程伴随着较为浓厚的偏见与歧视，诸夏在谈到夷狄时既鄙弃不屑，又希望四夷臣服进贡，表现出颇为矛盾的心理。
