古文小说即渗透了古文的意趣与笔法的小说。在清末民初，受国粹思潮的影响及骈文小说的刺激，古文小说的发展呈现出十分繁兴的态势。当时的古文小说可分为两类：一类在题材、主题或叙事模式上趋向新变，其中有的作品堪称现代小说的先声；一类则在意趣及写法上秉承了传统，其中产生了复古意味甚浓的古文体传奇和初步呈显自叙传小说特质的作品。由于作品的纪实和载道功能被有意识地强调，清末民初的古文小说在发展中出现了过度向古文靠拢的弊端。
고문소설즉삼투료고문적의취여필법적소설。재청말민초，수국수사조적영향급병문소설적자격，고문소설적발전정현출십분번흥적태세。당시적고문소설가분위량류：일류재제재、주제혹서사모식상추향신변，기중유적작품감칭현대소설적선성；일류칙재의취급사법상병승료전통，기중산생료복고의미심농적고문체전기화초보정현자서전소설특질적작품。유우작품적기실화재도공능피유의식지강조，청말민초적고문소설재발전중출현료과도향고문고롱적폐단。
Ancient novels are novels written in Chinese classical language. From the late Qing Dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China, influenced by the trend of quintessence of Chinese culture and simulated by parallel novels, ancient novels were in the trend of prosperity. Ancient novels of that period can be classified into two categories ： the first category tended to make innovations in terms of subject matter, theme and the narrative pattern, and some of the novels were regarded as the pioneer of modem novels; the second category inherited the traditional elements of interest, charm and style, and legends of classical writing and self-narration novels were created. With purposeful emphasis on realistic and moral functions of the literary works, the ancient novels from the late Qing Dynasty to the beginning of the Republic of China exposed its shortcomings of excessively close to Chinese classical language.
