Foster points out in his Marx＇s Ecology： Materialism and Nature that metabolic the- ory has been applied to the whole of Marx＇s ecological theory, and is the key to a comprehen- sive understanding of the theory. Foster traces the historical origins of Marx＇s metabolic theory, reveals the multiple connotations of it, and analyzes the causes and the approaches to eliminate metabolic fracture in capitalist society. Research on Marx＇s metabolic theory has important theo- retical and practical significances to the ecological civilization construction and the realization of ＂beautiful China＂.
