英语的way构式义为“定向创路前行”。通过文献和语料库调查,本研究关于此构式的历时演进有如下发现:1)早期构式中的“way”有实义,旁格不必出现;而当前的“way”义抽象化,旁格必现;2)与早期构式不同,当前构式压制并整合很多参与动词的题元组配;3)此构式的历时演进是个扩容过程,早期的三个动词句群发生变异或趋于萎缩,而当前构式中有十二个动词句群。考察结论为早期的构式义具体,当前的构式义抽象;构式演变及其句法变异的动因是语用需求和语义迁变。将构式语法与语法化理论相结合能对构式演变作出较好的描述和解释。

The way construction entails that the subject referent moves along a self-created path towards the destination. By way of literature review and corpus investigation, the present study has obtained the following findings on its diachronic chan- ges. First, the OBL phrase is not obligatory in the early-day construction with way in its concrete meaning, whereas the phrase must co-appear with the abstract meaning of way in the present-day construction. Second, different from its early days, the construction coerces and integrates the thematic roles of the participating verbs. Finally, the diachronic evolution of the con- struction has witnessed a process of category expansion, in which the three original clusters of verbs vary or shrink and twelve clusters of verbs have found their way to the present-day construction. Our survey has reached the conclusion that the seman- tics of the early-day construction is concrete while that of the present-day one quite general and that it is the pragmatic require- ment and semantic variation that result in the construction evolution as well as its syntactic changes. Diachronic evolution of such constructions can be better described and explained by the combination of Construction Grammar and Theory of Grammati- calization.
