Ge Hong; theory of the relationship between virtue and literature
在儒家崇礼贵德思想长期居于主导地位的古代中国,论及德行与文章的主次问题时,常常将德行放在更高的地位,呈现为一种重德轻文的观念.但晋代葛洪在《抱朴子》提出了“文德皆本”和“德粗文精”的新观念.不但将文章提升到与德行同为君子之本的高度,并且以德行易见为粗,文体难识为精为依据,认为从事文章著述的“立言”较“立德”更有意义.葛洪的这种新的文德观及其论述,为中国古代士人摆脱立德、立功即对政治的依附奠定了理论基础,有助于形成独立的社会人格,从而开辟出一条新的归隐著书的人生道路.葛洪的文德论上承汉魏,下开齐梁,在中古文学理论的发展过程中,具有承上启下的地位.

Under the influence of dominant Confucian thought which upholds virtue and ethical code, people usually emphasize the priority of virtue when they addresses the relationship between virtue and literature. But in Bao Bu Zi, the author Ge Hong proposes the new idea which not only considers both virtue and literature as the roots, but also considers "establishing speech" by literature writing is more significant than "establishing virtue", because he thinks that virtue is easy to be recognize thus is rough, while literature is hard to be understood thus is subtle. His new thesis about the relationship between virtue and literature provides a foundation for ancient literati to get rid of the constraint of establishing virtue and achievement, thus to detached themselves from the political power. It helps the forming of independent personality and opens a new road towards reclusion for the elite scholars. Ge Hong' s theory occupies a position which is connecting the preceding and the following.
