20世纪后20年，中国经济增长“点-轴”基本上沿着经济区→经济区网络和城市网络一基地＋新型乡镇＋经济技术开发区、沿海开放城市和开放地带→经济区域、综合型经济带、综合经济圈、外向型经济区、新的经济带→“以线串点，以点带面”、“承东启西、纵贯南北”、积极培育新的经济增长点和经济带的路径而演化。进入新世纪之后，围绕“三纵两横”的轴线，加快新城市群建设和更具特色的经济区建设，成为区域经济协调发展的主线。为进一步加快区域经济发展，今后在点-轴建设方面．一是应对区域板块给予重新划分；二是应尽快建立经济区或城市群政府联盟组织机构，认真落实相关规划；三是打通“断头路”。
