人力车夫是随着人力车的引进而出现的一个庞大群体。由于人力车夫人数过多，他们之间的竞争十分激烈，一方面为了租得一辆车子与自己同行竞争，另一方面又在抵抗新式交通工具的应用之中挣扎着，同时还处于存废舆论的漩涡之中。人力车作为交通近代化的一种过渡，必然会被新式交通工具所取代，但是，在没有妥善安排车夫生计问题之前，任何冠冕堂皇的理由都经不起考验。
