在既有的费孝通研究中，乡土中国这一概念获得极大的重视，大量的研究皆沿袭从乡土到小城镇再至区域发展与全国一盘棋的线索来对其学术思想与方法进行解读。然而几乎未有研究注意到费孝通对于中国山川的关注，而恰恰是这种对于中国山川关注的前后变化为我们更加深入地理解他的学术思想和方法提供了一种新思路。由此入手不但可以对其有关中国社会、文化及中国人的研究形成更为全面与整体的认识，而且也促使我们思考中国社会学、人类学的科学性与人文性之间的关系。这种两重性决不可偏废其一，它们的平衡无论是对学科的建设，还是对理解中国社会、文化及中国人而言，都将发挥不容忽视的作用。

Abstract：The concept of Earthbound China has been greatly emphasized in the previous studies of Fei Xiaotong. A large number of the studies interpret Fei Xiaotong＇s academic ideas and methodologies as from the village to the small town and then to the regional development and the whole country while there are no researches dealt with Fei Xiaotong＇ s concerns about the Chinese mountains and rivers. As a new approach, the concern of Chinese mountains and rivers can help us to understand Fei Xiaotong＇s researches on Chinese society, culture and the Chinese people. More important is that the spirituality of mountains and rivers can lead us to think about the rela- tionship between the scientificity and humanity of Chinese sociology and anthropology. The balanced development of this duality will not only contribute to the construction of the disciplines but also benefit for our understanding of Chinese society, culture and the Chinese people.
