It is important to have accurate and appropriate band descriptors of students' Chinese language performance in the standards of education quality. This paper addresses the problems existing in Chinese language evaluation with reference to relevant findings worldwide. A number of strategies are discussed. For instance, band descriptors should serve AlL and other purposes; descriptions should be relevant to students' Chinese language competencel descriptors should be precise and positive with “can- do” phrases; and multiple applications of and reflections on band descriptors are required before finalization.
