自两汉至南北朝，五官掾是太守最重要的属吏之一，若干中央官员的衙署中也有五官掾。在郡级建制中，五官掾总揽各种事务，地位与权势仅功曹可与之相比。五官掾的地位不断发生变化，隋代地方行政与中央官制大变革直接导致了五官掾的最终消亡。

자량한지남북조，오관연시태수최중요적속리지일，약간중앙관원적아서중야유오관연。재군급건제중，오관연총람각충사무，지위여권세부공조가여지상비。오관연적지위불단발생변화，수대지방행정여중앙관제대변혁직접도치료오관연적최종소망。
Wuguanyuan was one of the most important affiliated officials of the Taishou （prefect） from the Han Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasties. The post of Wuguanyuan was also set in some central government offices. In the prefecture system,the Wuguanyuan dominated a variety of administrative affairs,and only the Gongcao （a kind of magistrate） could be compared with their status and power. The position of Wuguanyuan had been constantly changing. The great change of local administration and the central bureaucracy in the Sui Dynasty led directly to the ultimate demise of the Wuguanyuan.
